For fellow Potters, this page is where I’ll share my favorite things! I plan to fill it with my tried and true Potter’s tools, accessories, and generally what I feel I can’t live without in my studio.
Pottery is an expensive hobby. My hope is that these tips help you to purchase quality, useful items the first time – and to help you decide where to spend your precious dollars (and conversely, where you can get away with scrimping). The Basics – What Every Potter Needs (Just Starting Out)
If you’re just getting started in Pottery (like taking a beginner class at your local community studio), there is very little you need to purchase to get started. In the vast majority of cases, the studio is going to supply you with the basic items you need (clay, tools you can borrow, etc.). However, if you go beyond the entry level class, you’re likely to want to consider these items.
A Pottery Tool Bag
Having your own tool bag will help you keep your supplies together, and makes it SO much easier to transport them to and from the studio you attend for classes. These are my top 2 options for potters at any level – and they each have their benefits. I happen to own both of these styles, and use them extensively.

A Quality Pottery Apron
The second item that is worth it’s weight in gold (to save you from the unavoidable stains and wear/tear on clothing) is a quality pottery apron. The one I recommend for Potters is made of a heavy canvas, and has a split design, so it covers your pant legs and is very easy to work in compared to some other styles (especially at the wheel). This one works well for everyone in the family, and the extra thick canvas fabric has held up very well to washing.
